After the just concluded U19 CAR championship tournament 3 emerging Cranes players have caught the eye of the technical Director David Dobela who has summoned them to join the provisional squad that is in camp for the 2007 Elgon Cup second leg. They are Joel Anguyo (Flanker), Andrew Barasa (Centre) and Brian Odong (Prop). The schoolboys have joined the training camp that is based at Kampala RFC grounds.

MTN Heathens disqualified
MTN HEATHENS have been disqualified from the Uganda Guinness Cup after fielding an ineligible player in their 13-10 semi final victory over G4S Pirates. The G4S Pirates immediately petitioned the URU after the game saying Kenyan lock Scott Oluoch was illegally fielded.

URFU then gave MTN Heathens an ultimatum to show reason as to why they should not be disqualified to which they failed to satisfactory contest from a technical point of view. The semi final results have thus been awarded in favor of G4S Pirates who will now face UTL Kobs in the finals..[+]

In group A Namibia improved their chances of qualification for the U19 world championship when they defeated the Tunisians 24-10.The firepower from the heavy Namibian pack was just too much for the Carthage Eagles who have now lost two games in a row. Namibia now need to beat the tournament favourites Zimbabwe to qualify for the U19 world championships.
Zimbabwe got a narrow 17-7 victory over Morocco in a very physical encounter. Morocco took an early lead with a push over try from their prop, which was converted. Scores were 7-0 in favour of the Atlas lions. [+]

MTN Heathens stop G4S Pirates
UThe G4S Pirates versus MTN Heathens Guinness Uganda Cup semifinal lived up to its billing as fans got the money's woth in a closely contested and passionate encounter at the Kampala Rugby Football Club grounds.

The game kicked off at 1500 hrs with the home team Pirates piling on the early pressure but the visitors Heathens held firm. A rare foray into the G4S Pirates 22 resulted in a push over try for outstanding eighth man Steve Ogada, the try was duly converted by winger Edgar Lemerigar.  .[+]
Match Analysis: Zambia vs Uganda
The Rugby Cranes stormed Lusaka, Zambia for the final south pool group B game riding on a high after a pulsating come from behind 20-19 victory over last year's runners up Namibia. Prior to this no home team had lost a game apart from Senegal who ere narrowly pipped 10-12 by Cote d'Ivoire in Dakar. The Ugandan contingent was thus apprehensive and knew the Zambians were going to defend their turf fiercely and indeed it came to pass. The game started cautiously with both sides not taking any early initiative but Uganda was on the offensive very soon after and almost got a try from a maul, but this was valiantly defended by the Zambians.. .[+]
Match Report: Zambia vs Uganda
The game started cautiously, with both sides not taking early initiative, but Uganda was on the offensive very soon after and almost got a try from a maul, but this was valiantly defended by the Zambians. The Zambians were putting in very good tackles and were really brave, because Uganda camped in their half for most parts of the game. In the 20th minute, we had a driving maul that crossed their line and Kinene only had to touch down for the first try. He, Anthony Kinene converted from a tight angle. The Zambians then tried to press and had some good phases with the backline, and were actually unlucky on two occasions when they had overlaps on the blind side but their poor handling was their undoing as they had already committed the winger.. .[+]
Uganda team heads south
Uganda Rugby Cranes depart on Thursday 5th July 2007 for Lusaka, to take on Zambia in the CAR cup South pool group B clash. The Cranes squad is almost intact with the only exceptions being experienced loose head prop Fred Mudoola who suffered a shoulder injury in the bruising encounter with Namibia and will be replaced by Ronald Adigasi while lock Moses Soita is missing due to private commitments. Ronald Mwisaka will replace him. Utility back Brian Tabaruka who missed the Namibia match with an injured foot rejoins the team. Coach Yayiiro Kasasa is away in South Africa on an IRB coaching course therefore Technical Director David Dobela will be assisted by former national team Captain Peter Magona. . .[+]
Uganda causes upset
The Giant killing Uganda Rugby Cranes caused an upset of epic proportions in the CAR Cup on 23rd June 2007 when they came from 12-0 down to pip the overwhelming favourites Namibia 20-19 in an action packed game. Such was the intensity of the game the South African referee Mark Lawrence had to be replaced at half time after getting caught up in a big hit that left his eye needing stitches. In another big win for East Africa the Kenyans beat the Atlas Lions from Morocco 26-13 in Nairobi. The hype about the Cranes versus the Biltongboere had been one of a David versus Goliath contest with many neutrals predicting the hosts would have achieved if they kept the score respectable. ..[+]
Against all odds
Uganda once again pulled a rabbit out of the hat coming from 12 points down to see off World Cup bound Namibia, in a Confederation of Africa Rugby game played at Kampala Rugby Club over the weekend, in what will count as Uganda’s hugest victory to date.
Led by towering captain Adrian Bukenya the 15 men of Uganda answered every question asked of them in the affirmative, having not been given a fighting chance before the game.
Namibia fresh from a European tournament started well spreading the ball wide and creating overlaps at will and were duly rewarded with a try scored in the corner by big prop Jane du Toit, the conversion was missed by fly half Melrick Africa. ..

Rugby Cranes?

A few years ago I was rather disappointed to read in the newspapers the Uganda National Rugby Team referred to as the Rugby Cranes. I think that was when we started participating in the CAR tournament and getting some good results. Rugby Cranes? Why Rugby Cranes, I asked myself.
