Musoke Kicks Mongers to Touch as Rhinos upset Mongers
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 11:52

A fine display of place and from hand kicking from John Musoke led Rhinos to a shock 13- 11 win over their small brothers the Mongers, the first in 3 years. Having won the first round game against the Rhinos with abonus point and upset Kobs a betting man would have been forgiven for thinking this was going to be another routine win for the Mongers. However a resilient first half form the Rhinos saw them stay in the game trailing 5 to 3, with a Kakuru try having given Mongers the lead and Rhinos replying through a John Musoke penalty. The second half began in the same frantic style and as the rain began to come down, experienced John Musoke took charge ensuring the Mongers were pinned back in their half through some racking kicks that found the Mongers players wanting. The Mongers did increase their lead to 5 through a Wasswa penalty but again John Musoke and his boys did not wilt forcing Mongers into errors and a penalty which John converted for an 8-6 score, Mongers again increased their lead to 11- 6 and that was all they wrote as a try from Abel and a world class conversion from the touchline from John Musoke condemned Mongers fans to wailing and gnashing of teeth as near violent scenes were nearly unearthed. Calm was restored and the Mongers launched an assault that saw near to 15 phases of play but the wet conditions, poor handling and how can you forget the punishing kicking from John ensured Rhinos had their  third win of the season and throw a spanner into the works from a Mongers perspective. As to whether this is the win that turns Rhinos from Boys 2 Men remains to be seen.

Man of the Match- Am sure you have guessed by now John Musoke, who as some who watched commented was playing like the John who had just made his debut.

Culprit of the game- The Mongers handling in the second half was well, no words but a couple of Mongers fans who ran onto the pitch to contest a try awarded by the referee will be our choice. Totally unacceptable behavior, the pitch is a no go zone for the fans no matter what especially to accost a referee. Many times we will disagree with decision but please keep the game clean. Last thing you want is fans being banned for life ask the South African that tackled a ref in a springbok All Blacks game.

Moment of the Match- Game was error strewn and not much of a spectacle but the sight of Rhino coach do a swan dive onto the Kampala pitch at the end of the game was worth every wait.

Nile 05 - MTN Heathens 55

The Heathens continued with their dominant ways against a physical Nile side with a bonus point win that keeps them on track for the Nile Special Premier Rugby League (yes a mouthful) title. The win came at a cost though as Heathens player Edgar Lemeriga copped a broken jaw and 2 broken teeth and will be out for up to 10 weeks.

Toyota Buffaloes 00 - G4S Pirates 39

The G4S Pirates also stayed on track in their quest to get their title hunt back on track with a hard fought 39 Nil win over the struggling Buffaloes.  An efficient first half performance and a string of howlers with the line beckoning ensured Pirates had a seemingly easy walk in with Bonus point in the bag. Buffaloes remain winless and still in the relegation dog fight.

Hima Impis 05 - UTL Kobs 31

Kobs made light work of the previously touted clever boys from Makerere whipping the 31 points to a solitary try at the Makerere grounds. Having just played an earlier midweek game against the Champions the Heathens where they went all out, it was always going to be a big ask with such a short turn around time before their next game. Impis continue to have midweek games due to their late start in the season as many of their players returned late for the start of the season due to the term opening dates. Expect them to drop further points as a result; coach power will have his work cut out to build depth and staying power.

Gulu Elephants 12 - Rams 00

In the lower league Gulu continued their fine form edging the Rams from Mulago 12 to Nil, keeping alive their chances for promotion.

Mbale Elephants 13 - Summerkamp 29

Summerkamp, showed they are no where near summer camping yet dispatching home team the Mbale Elephants with a Bonus point win. Is it just me or are there only Elephants upcountry, don’t be surprised to hear the Lira Elephants also blow their trumpet.
