The super 8 rugby league continued to showcase its “show time” characteristics with 2 “cricket” scores in 2 of the day’s four games and normal rugby scores in the other 2.
Setting off the weekend fanfare were hosts G4S Pirates taking on Rhinos at the Kampala Rugby Club, a game which was entirely dominated by the Pirates, although they have failed to figure out how to beat a team by more than 30 points, as exhibited by their other 2 rivals, MTN Heathens and UTL Kobs. 4 tries for the Pirates, 2 by Martin Karugonjo, 1 by Rugumayo Mpuga and the other by Mukunzi Jackson ensured a clean 20 score for them from the tries, and the 3 resulting conversions by Byron Atubikire topped up the necessary 6 points to give the Pirates a 26 – 3 final win over the Rhinos, who managed to smuggle in a penalty kick while they were getting their behinds kicked. The highlight of this game was when Rhinos scrum half Buloti got a red card for stamping on his fellow Rhinos player which many thought was a hash decision from center referee Anguyo who generally was not having a good day, it’s like MP’s in your own party collecting signatures to get you censured! Pirates won a bonus point for scoring at least 4 tries, plus their 4 points for a win, thus earning a full 5 points from this game.
At Kyadondo, hosts Toyota Buffaloes showed why the Toyota Landcruiser is the favorite machine to carry huge weapons in African wars, ‘specially Libya and Somalia, by blasting away the “fisher’s of men”, Entebbe Mongers, and capsizing their boat of dreams of 2 consecutive wins in the 2012 league, beating them 23 – 15 in full time. It was no easy take down however, for at half time it was 13 – 10 in favor of the hot tempered wildlife creatures, the buffaloes. Buffaloes’ wonder kid Philip Wokorach scored 2 tries in this winning effort, giving them their first win of the season. Kato Herbert and Olweny Andrew responsible for the 2 births……..err, tries for Sadolin Mongers. Buffaloes got 4 points.
In Jinja, the MTN Heathens seemed like they had been sent to purposely riot on behalf of all we citizens that are pissed off with the Jinja based Owen falls and Bujagali dams for non performance. Home side Nile felt the wrath of the Heathens who hammered them 80 – 3, although they were happy they improved from last weekend’s battering of 97 – 0 from the Kobs. “We are now being beaten with 80’s, and coming down slowly toward zero”, a fan was overheard screaming as he munched away at a Nile Perch. For the try scorers, refer to the entire Heathens line up, but just to give you a sneak peek, Athur Mukama had a field day with three tries, other try scorers were, Sembaje, Micheal Wokorach, Mulo Dennis, Kimuli Joel, Bishop Onen, with Musoke Ronnie bringing in the conversions. The surprise package of this game was a drop goal from prop Dennis Murithi aka Tialata, Heathens bagged 5 full points.
At the Makerere grounds, fans were totally surprised to arrive and realize the venue hadn’t been allocated to the graduation ceremony, so the game could go on. Perennial rioters Makerere Impis, now going by the name Xfm Impis were hosting the UTL Kobs. It seems the words of Mbeki of fighting hard had gotten to their heads mid week after his lecture, for at half time they had kept the Kobs on their toes, as if being burnt on a saucepan, managing to deflate them to a humble 34 – 8 score, and they were threatening to win this one. However, fortunes turned around like a Presidential promise in the second half, the Kobs coming back like they were NTC rebels, pummeling the degree-searching boys with 41 un-answered points, ending the game at 75 – 8 for Kobs. Try scorers for Kobs were led by Steven Ogwete with four tries, other players on the score sheet were Odong Brian, Justin Kimono, Kalyango Oscar, Lutwama Isaac, Ronnie Lutakome, Timothy Mudoola, Barasa Andrew, Timothy Kabonero and new recruit Joseph Nsubuga. This gave the Kobs the full 5 points.
But the biggest winner of the weekend once again was Nile Special that made all this happen and kept the fans happy despite the hot scotching sun. The Mc of the day to many fans surprise was celebrated full back Allan Musoke, who joined the ug rugby fan zone crew in entertaining the fans and keeping them up to date with live updates on games at different venues. The fans man of the match was Joseph Kiwalabye who received his medal from Ronald Kalyegira the area sales representative Nile Special. Pamela Abeja was also the proud winner of a Nile Special six pack for having the closest prediction.

Point of correction… Byron Atubikire is the Rhinos fly half and he switched to the scrumhalf position after Buloti’s red card & he also scored the penalty for them….
