Toyota Buffaloes 07 G4S Pirates 19
We were sport on with our prediction on Pirates being denied a bonus point victory and just 4 points off the mark on the scores in our closest prediction in week 1.
This was the season opener and it was graced by the Nile Breweries head honchos led by Marketing Director Daniel Ogong who kicked off the league ceremoniously with URU secretary Alex Kalimugogo.
Fanzone were on hand to activate this match.
Kick off proper Pirates, immediately asserted their authority pinning home team Buffaloes in their own half.
Buffaloes were taken to school at the line outs and scrum downs as they continued to be starved of possession. It was just a matter of time before Pirates crossed the try line, as Buffaloes defended desperately. Dennis Etuket atoned for Anthony Kinene’s 2 missed penalties when he capitalized on a bomb from Joel Anguyo to ghost past a flat footed Buffaloes fullback Philip Wokorach .Anthony Kinene slotted in the conversion to give Pirates a 7 nil lead. This appeared to open the flood gates as outstanding Pirates 8th man Marvin Odong picked beautifully from the base of the scrum in front of the posts and stepped his way to an easy try. Scrum half Anthony Kinene again obliged with his boot to give Pirates a 14 nil lead. Buffalo’s flanker Eric Kasita was sent to the sin bin for a dangerous spear tackle. Pirates quickly took advantage of the one man advantage to score off an overlap at the corner flag through wing Jude Kirya. Anthony Kinene missed the conversion for the half to end 19 nil in favor of Pirates.
HALF TIME: Toyota Buffaloes 00 G4S Pirates 19
At the restart Toyota Buffaloes took the game to Pirates. Though still struggling at the set pieces they managed to raise the ball and wreck havoc when they ventured into the Pirates half of the pitch. In broken play the swift Buffaloes backline attacked with youthful zeal and it was Pirates turn to defend desperately.
Buffaloes would eventually get unto the score sheet after full back Philip Wokorach chased down his own Garryowen to score a try. He converted his own try to bring the scores to 07-19.Both teams thereafter went pound for pound as the game got very physical. The scores remained the same at the final whistle in what was an entertaining start to the 2012 Nile Special Premiership. Buffaloes host Sadolin Mongers at Kyadondo RC in their next game while Pirates host Rhinos in a highly anticipated derby match at Kampala Rugby Club.
Moment of the match: Buffaloes impact substitute 8th man Norman Luwum showed his ball carrying prowess as he broke several tackles .Pirates Anthony Kinene who had had an outstanding game was completely floored as he tried to tackle Norman, this incident left the whole crowd at Kyadondo grounds screaming for the better half of 5 minutes. Anthony Kinene was stretchered off concussed, we wish him a quick recovery.
Nile Special Man of the match: Buffaloes full back Philip Wokorach who scored on his debut and converted a try, was a crowd favorite. His evasive running and silky skills were a sight to behold.
MTN Heathens 59 XFm Impis 03
Defending league champions MTN Heathens hosted the Makerere University students, Impis at Kyadondo. It only took Heathens 3 minutes to open their try count through full back Benon Kizza and by the 17th minute they had secured their bonus point try. Brian Kikaawa and Benon Kizza both scored a brace of tries while wing Ronnie Musoke and center Michael Wokorach joined in on the try feast with a try each. Fly Half Jasper Ochen slotted in a penalty and a conversion before being stretchered off with a twisted ankle.Impis meekly replied with the single penalty.
Again correct on our prediction on the winner but off the mark on the score.
