As promised, it was fireworks this weekend as the Super 8 rugby league kicked off, with the first tantalizing game at Kyadondo club on Friday, where hosts Toyota Buffaloes took on money bags G4S Pirates in a 2 sided fixture.
The first half was completely dominated by Pirates, with tries by Denis Etuket, Marvin Odong and Jude Kirya, 5 points for each try guaranteed, unlike the un-guaranteed 20% promised interest in online forex gambling, but unfortunately only 2 resulting penalties sufficed adding 4 points to their tally, thus giving the Pirates a 19 – 0 lead by half time, and calming down the nerves of new coach Godwin Kayangwe who is on too much pressure to deliver, even more than BOU governor Tumusiime Mutebile is to reduce interest rates, or we keep our lockups locked.
The second half was an entirely different matter, for the Buffaloes must have been fed on fertilized hay during the break, they were not playing around. They kept the Pirates in their own half like they were AMISOM navy seals patrolling the Indian Ocean for Somali Pirates in the Gulf of Aden. New wonder kid Phillip Wokorach added the pressure 7 minutes from time by scoring a try for the Buffaloes and 2 points from the conversion ensured a full 7 score for them, but unfortunately that was all they were going to get, spoiling the Buffaloes debut for the legendary Seguya, and thus ending the game 19 – 7 for Pirates.
On Saturday, the games were equally mesmerizing though in totally different dimensions;
At Kampala rugby club, hosts UTL Kobs took the opportunity to humiliate Jinja’s Nile by giving them a thorough thrashing of 97 – 0, leaving the Jinja crew cursing why they ever allowed the Bujagali Jajjas to be relocated to another part of Busoga! In case anyone needs to know who scored the tries, please refer to the entire Kobs lineup, coz by half time, the score was like a figure the Deputy Chief Justice was proposing as a new salary, a 38 and very many zeros!!
In the land of fish and a gazillion beaches owned by dreadlocked musicians with no sense of investment acumen (they strictly buy beaches, some even without sand), Entebbe that is, hosts Entebbe Mongers beat Rhinos 10 – 3 to ensure the name “House of Pain” remains relevant.
In the final game of the weekend- opener at Kyadondo, hosts MTN Heathens gave the Makerere Impis an exhaustive spanking, the Union organizers were left contemplating relegating the students back to the Schools rugby league, so they tussle it out with Hana Mixed and their ilk. Impis had just secured a sponsorship package from XFm, but at this rate, the sponsorship will reduce to “calling in and requesting whatever song you want for free” if they don’t show results soon. A 59 – 3 melee by the Heathens was a strong warning to opponents, although Kobs did a better show at expressing who the boss clearly is at this point in the league.
So here’s how the league works, there are 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 1 bonus point for scoring 4 tries (and more), and 1 bonus point for losing by 7 points (or fewer).
Kob is on top of the table with 5 points, while Heathens is second, also with 5 points but a disadvantage on try difference. Pirates is third with 4 points (no bonus) and fourth are Mongers also with 4 points but fewer tries, followed by Rhinos who scooped a point for losing by 7 tries while the rest are sharing bottom place with “nadda” points. If there were “negative” points for losing by a certain number of tries, Impis and Nile would be in negative, thank goodness that rule is not yet there.
With this good start, we can’t wait for more massacres on the pitch by the big names, or shall there be some upsets??……………stay tuned!!!
